The Libyan capital, Tripoli, hosted on Saturday the proceedings of a consultative meeting of ministers and representatives of the member states of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD), following the reopening of the headquarters of the Executive Secretariat after several years of inactivity.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Al-Taher Al-Baour, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Acting) of the State of Libya, with the notable presence of foreign ministers from member states, reflecting growing regional support for the revitalization of this important regional bloc.
In his remarks, Mr. Al-Baour described the return of the Community to Tripoli as a pivotal milestone in the path of joint African action, reaffirming Libya’s commitment to providing all forms of political and logistical support to ensure the effectiveness of the Community and to strengthen its role in advancing regional cooperation and promoting stability and development across the Sahel-Saharan region.
He further emphasized that this step falls within the vision of the Government of National Unity to reposition Libya as a key actor within the African sphere, through the activation of multilateral frameworks and the revitalization of mechanisms for coordination and integration among member states, in a manner that serves shared interests and enhances regional security and stability.
The event witnessed broad participation from ministers and representatives of several countries, including Tunisia, Sudan, The Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Niger, Somalia, the Central African Republic, Mali, Djibouti, Eritrea, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Ghana, in addition to Libya. This reflects a strong political will to revive the role of the Community from its headquarters in Tripoli, as one of the most prominent regional frameworks concerned with strengthening economic and security cooperation, thereby granting its reactivation increasing strategic importance amid the rapidly evolving challenges facing the region.
